Thüringen (Saxon) Duchies and Principalities

The Ernestinische Herzogtümer (Ernestine Duchies), or Saxon Duchies were a

number of small states that existed in the modern state of Thuringen. The

Saxon Duchies were junior branches of the Saxon House of Wettin, the most

famous of which was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha whose members provided the ruling

dynasties of Great Britain, Belgium, Bulgaria, and Portugal. In addition to

the Ernestine Duchies there were also the principalities of Reuss and

Schwarzburg which did not belong to the Wettin dynasty. After the revolution

of 1918 the states briefly existed in republican form until they were all

incorporated into the new state of Thuringen - named after the Medieval

German state that existed in the same area.
