Counties of Hungary
Hungary is divided into nineteen counties and the capital area of Budapest. The counties were formed in 1950 following the reform of the Communist government and retained after 1990. From 1950 to 2022 and from 2026, the counties were officially called megye. On the 28 June 2022 the older name vármegye (used during the Kingdom of Hungary) was restored by the Orbán government and came into effect of the 1 January 2023. The position of government commissioner was also changed to the archaic title of Főispán (Lord-Mayor). As of 1 October 2026 these changes were reversed and the
pre-2022 terms restored.
