Note: After 1707 the Kingdoms of England and Scotland were united as the United Kingdom

of Great Britain, from this point the regnal numbering of the Monarchs has followed the

English sequence and this how the Monarchs have been known internationally. However,

in Scotland the regnal numbering continues using the Scottish sequence, thus the current

British Monarch is known worldwide as Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, but in

Scotland is referred to as Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom as the English Queen

Elizabeth I (1558-1603) was not Queen of Scotland. The regnal numbering was a source of

controversy early in the reign of Elizabeth II/I when new pillar boxes were installed in

Scotland bearing the royal cypher ‘EIIR’ prompting what became known as the “Pillar Box War”

which caused the royal cypher to be removed and not used in Scotland. The regnal numbering

in Scotland as follows (Gaelic names):

01 May 1707 - 01 Aug 1714 Stiubhairt, Anna I (Anne)
01 Aug 1714 - 11 Jun 1727 Welf, Seòras I (George I)
